Leather ~ Color

Drum Dyed Leather

Custom Saddles ~ Drum Dyed Colors

Drum dyeing is the process of immersing leather in a rotating drum with dye and tumbling it so that the hide is completely and evenly covered. Every piece of leather has its own unique individual markings which adds character to the hide. Drum dying is a completely natural finishing process. Absorption of dye may differ from area to area showing slight variations in color in the hide, just like wood shows the grain when stained. Generally, loose areas of the skin like that found around the neck typically accept more dye and may appear a bit darker. Typically drum dyed leather has a softer feel than hand dyed leather.

Hand Dyed Leather

Custom Saddles ~ Hand Dyed Colors

With the hand dyeing process, we use a natural unfinished hide and the dye is rubbed into the leather by hand which allows the natural grain of the leather to be seen, a process called antiquing. This technique is used to bring out the natural markings in the hide, such as healed scars and barbed wire nicks, and gives the leather a highlighting which can’t be achieved by factory dyed leather. These distinctive markings and nuances in texture and color are considered natural beauty marks and are a testament to its authenticity.
