Purpose and proper use of saddle pads...

The better a saddle fits the horse, the less you have to worry about saddle pads. Saddle pads were originally used to help keep the sweat off the saddle and for that purpose a thin Navajo blanket worked just fine. Nowadays there are hundreds of saddle pads available from no-tech to high-tech. Saddle pad manufacturers estimate that 60% to 70% of horses in the United States are being ridden with saddles that don’t fit properly. We frequently talk to people who have spent more than $1000 on a saddle and then find themselves needing to go out and spend another $200 to $300 on a pad to "fix" a saddle that doesn’t fit properly. While it is true that saddle pads can take up some of the slack if your saddle isn’t quite a perfect fit but there is definitely a point where if the saddle fit is poor, no saddle pad made can adequately compensate for the difference. In such cases the solution should be obvious --- get a saddle that fits properly! 

On the other side of the fence there are times where you' d really like to have your horse be as comfortable as possible and a saddle pad can do much to provide that.
